About Music Business 101

Music Business 101, concieved, developed and hosted by R&B/Pop/Soul Vocalist and Songwriter Natalie Brown, serves to be an  ‘information freeway’ for singers, musicians, instrumentalists, song writers, music managers, music entrepreneurs… anyone who is involved in the music business. This site provides useful and timely resources, articles and other information that will aid you as you learn and carve a way for yourself in the business.

I am not a music business consultant, I’m an artist, just like you. The site is here to point you in the direction of useful resources to help you build your own career. Because it’s the new music business age and it’s DIY all the way!

The Origins of Music Business 101

Let’s face it, back in 1997 when I got into music professionally, the music business was a different beast altogether! Fast forward more than 10 years later and we are facing an absolutely different “game”. In fact, nothing is the same anymore!

When I first entered the mainstream music industry in 1997, the idea was to get a demo together and get a major label record deal. I quickly learned with the invention of the Mp3 and the rapid, stunning changes that rocked our industry, that I would have to have more than demos and beg for a deal! Thus began my quest to find out how to make the music business work for me and how to build my own career instead of beg for one.

It’s been an ongoing process of acquiring new knowledge throughout my time so far in ‘the business’. What is Music Business 101 was started in 2001 and was known as “Resources for Artists”.  The site started as a page I created on my official site natalie-brown.com. It was made for a few of my friends at the now defunct Tonos.com (the songwriter site developed by Carole Bayer Sager, Babyface and David Foster). I was relatively new to the new music business world, but had done a lot of research and learning by trial and error. My goal was to pass along resources and books that I found helpful to my fellow music friends. As time has moved on, the ‘page’ has gotten bigger and longer, so I decided it was time to move all these resources to their own home at Music Business 101.

Today, Music Business 101 serves as an information and resource highway for vocalists, song writers, producers, musicians, engineers and all others from the paths of music, who seek to combine their talent with knowledge.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I preach knowledge as the key to success in this very undefined and uncharted new music business territory. My motto is “Each one, teach one”, and it is my hope that this site will serve as a place where resources are shared and knowledge is gathered.

Enjoy your visit and if you have any ideas for added resources or improvements, feel free to send me an email.

To your success!
