Social Networking Sites

A Social Networking Site is a web site that provides a virtual community for people interested in a particular subject or just to “hang out” together. Members communicate by voice, chat, instant message, videoconference and blogs, and the service typically provides a way for members to contact friends of other members. Such sites may also serve as a vehicle for meeting in person. The “social networking site” is the 21st century term for “virtual community,” a group of people who use the Internet to communicate with each other about anything and everything.

For the purposes of this site, Social Network Sites are ones that are not necessarily completely focused on music, however; music may make up a part of the social component. For sites that deal exclusively or primarily with music, please see the Online Music Site listing HERE. I have also included Social Bookmarking, Social Aggregation, Video Sharing and other social interactive sites on this list.

Remember that you can make use of any social networking site to make people aware of your music. Just make sure that you have a common interest with the people who share the social network and make sure you read the Terms of Service for each site before you join and actively promote your music. Hi5 also allows the user to create personal photo albums and set up a music player in the profile. Users can also send friend requests via e-mail to other users. When a person receives a friend request, he may accept or decline it, or block the user altogether. If the user accepts another user as a friend, the two will be connected directly or in the 1st degree. The user will then appear on the person’s friend list and vice-versa.

MySpace	MySpace is a social networking website. Its headquarters are in Beverly Hills, California, US, where it shares an office building with its immediate owner, Fox Interactive Media, which is owned by News Corporation. MySpace became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006. According to comScore, MySpace was overtaken internationally by its main competitor, Facebook, in April 2008, based on monthly unique visitors.

Piczo	Their eponymous service, also called Piczo, is an online photo website builder and community, which is for generation of free advertising-supported websites.
Ping	Ping.fm is a free social networking and micro-blogging web service that enables users to post to multiple social networks simultaneously.
Plurk	Plurk is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as plurks) through short messages or links, which can be up to 140 text characters in length.
Propeller	Propeller, previously known as Netscape.com, is a social news aggregator operated by AOL-Netscape. It is similar to Digg; users can vote for which stories are to be included on the front page and may comment on them as well.

Rate Your Music	Rate Your Music (or RYM) is a metadata database where musical (and non-musical) albums, EPs, singles, videos, and bootlegs are rated and reviewed by users. This data is then used to generate recommendations for users and to create rated lists of albums. Weighted averages are used to calculate the ordering for these lists; regular members who write reviews and rate more albums have a greater weight applied to their ratings. Viddler	Viddler is an interactive online video platform for uploading, sharing, enhancing, tagging, commenting on, and forming groups around videos. Viddler provides a free service for non-commercial users, the paid Viddler business service includes support, a customizable player, the ability to create a private community, detailed analytics, priority encoding, HD encoding, iTunes support, control over advertising and full branding. There is also an opt-in advertising option where revenue is shared. However, videos uploaded under the free service have advertising automatically overlaid across the video content, and neither uploaders nor viewers have any control or influence on the selection or display of advertising
Vimeo	Vimeo is a video-centric social networking site which launched in November 2004. The site supports embedding, sharing, video storage, and allows user-commenting on each video page. Users must register to upload content. Registered users may also create a profile and upload small user pictures as their avatars, comment and “like” videos. Vimeo does not allow commercial videos, gaming videos, pornography, or anything not created by the user to be hosted on the site. Vimeo has gained a reputation as catering to a high end, artistic crowd because of its high bitrate, resolution, and relative HD support.
